Author Visit: Dr. Mullen

Reading literacy rates are getting worse not better. Twenty-five percent of Americans didn’t read one book in 2007. According to the NEA, reading as a pastime will virtually disappear in 50 years if we don’t do something now to stop this alarming trend. And yet school libraries are being dismantled and reading coaches placed in other teaching roles. As a former reading teacher, I have created a fictional book that will help you and your students succeed in reading and in life.

Topics to discuss (Grades 6-8 critical years):

*Success

·      Rules - why they are so critical to your success in high school and beyond
·      With freedom comes responsibility/through hard work all things can happen
·      The age of transition - you can count on family/mentors to help guide you through
·      Highlight Erin Mullen’s sports career and discuss my most cherished gift
·      Read THE DAY I HIT A HOME RUN AT GREAT AMERICAN BALL PARK as a family

*Importance of responsibility and becoming a good citizen
·      Re-define fun as accomplishing goals and performing a task well
·      Education and reading go hand in hand

*Exercise: Read from the book when Fuji and Cathy discuss their uneasiness in leaving
behind their childhood to a new stage of development—the leaves of change (Robert Frost.)
Length of session is approximately one hour or less depending on bell schedule.
