Author Visit: Dr. Mullen
Reading literacy rates are getting worse not better. Twenty-five percent of Americans didn’t read one book in 2007. According to the NEA, reading as a pastime will virtually disappear in 50 years if we don’t do something now to stop this alarming trend. And yet school libraries are being dismantled and reading coaches placed in other teaching roles. As a former reading teacher, I have created a fictional book that will help you and your students succeed in reading and in life.
Topics to discuss (Grades 3-6):
*Skills a student can learn in becoming a master reader
· How to make a wise choice in selecting a new book to read
· When reading from a good book, you should hear author’s voice
· Dialogue: Purpose of voice inflection
· Become a detective: Anticipate what might happen next in the story
· Know the difference between nonfiction and fiction
· Expand your vocabulary with note cards and using new words in writing and in speaking
· After reading the final page of a story, write down a one paragraph summary of what important lesson or
lessons the author was trying to teach
· Read THE DAY I HIT A HOME RUN AT GREAT AMERICAN BALL PARK as a family
*Exercise: Read about Fuji’s camp out and Elephant Skin’s unfortunate demise with Creeper.
Length of session is approximately one hour or less depending on bell schedule.
School’s obligations:
*Purchase books directly from this web site. When 50,000 books have been purchased, Dr. Mullen will donate 50,000 books for the school giveaway program.
Literacy Partner to assist in funding books:
*Crayons 2 Computers stocks these books and will be provided free to
teachers/librarians whose schools don’t have the necessary funds to buy direct.
